Are you a woman who enjoys working with teams of like-minded individuals and gets a spiritual lift out of serving often "behind the scenes," to make a project fly? If you are interested in the Church's outreach and mission both in Canada and around the world, you would feel right at home here. Being part of the UCW ensures that you are quickly integrated into the very centre of the FSA family. The UCW welcomes and encourages all women at FSA to become members of the UCW.
The purpose of the UCW is to unite women of the congregation for the total mission of the Church and to provide a medium through which they may express their loyalty and devotion to Jesus Christ in Christian witness, study, fellowship and service. In addition to monthly meetings, many additional women of the congregation step up when the need arises and support the special projects of the UCW, such as the Boutique Bazaar and Rummage Sale.
Here is a sampling of what we do each year.
The Bazaar, held each November, has sections for deli and baking delights, vintage jewellery, collectibles, gently used toys section and, of course, sewing and knitting. We also run a French Cafe for tired and hungry shoppers and Children's world for active tykes who don't like to shop. In recent years we have added a section for local artisans to sell their wares and this has proved immensely popular. Our sales average about $14,000 a year, all of which goes to selected local charities.
The Sewing Group meets Wednesdays at 9:30am from spring until the bazaar in November. Everyone who is interested in doing hand and machine sewing, cutting and stuffing is welcome. The group prepares items for sale at the Boutique Bazaar. Bring a lunch. Coffee is provided.
The rummage sale offers church members a place to recycle clothing, kitchenware, books, household effects, etc., which still have use for others. These sales also offer the community a shopping bonanza for good merchandise at an affordable price and occasionally a real "find" worthy of the Antiques Roadshow. Usually held in April, the date for the rummage sale is published well in advance in the Church Bulletin so that you can plan your donations and also set aside the date to come and buy.
The group usually meets on a Wednesday afternoon, once a month. The UCW women as a collective meet twice a year for fellowship, inspiration and special business, usually in November and May. Watch for announcements of meetings and projects in the Bulletin and in our email blast, This Week at FSA. Special projects such as the Bazaar and the Rummage Sale require commitment outside of these times.
